This week in our caterpillar’s room saw the emergence of a new interest topic. Our little learners were introduced to their bugs and insects’ interest through a ‘Bugs Home’ book (1/8). Through this story they were given the opportunity to discover an introduction to different kinds of bugs and where they live.
Throughout the week saw an emergence of a sensory bug garden in the learning environment which saw the area create a man-made version of a natural bug habitat for children to explore. In this learning space consisted of natural and man-made resources for children to further explore bugs as we progress through our new interest.
In continuation of their sensory theme from the prior week our little learners used their senses to explore insect sensory play in their new space. This small group learning opportunity allowed the children to interact with each other, point out different insects and move them around in this space (2/8).
During the week also saw our caterpillars learning about bugs through the creative form of arts and crafts. With their educator children learnt about bees then further extending their learning about bees through a creative arts activity creating their own insect bee (3/8).
What the caterpillars have learnt this week:
Through providing children with the opportunity to explore bugs they notice many STEM concepts which further encourages children to use their thinking skills for example, why does a bug look like this?
Through our environments and learning experiences our caterpillars are being given the opportunity to learn scientific concepts, a growing appreciation of nature and to be more adventurous learning all about the various insects and bugs in our natural environment.
Next week (week beginning 8th August) the Caterpillars will continue:
Bugs and Bottle Tops will be introduced to the children and is a simple and fun activity where children continued developing their emerging fine motor skills using their hands to develop their gripping skills.
Sensory Play dough experience where children will be able to explore bugs and insects.
Building a bug hotel using sustainable and natural resources in our indoor environment.
Continue utilising our bug and insects sensory garden for children to continue to explore and discover the wonders of bugs.
Link to Early Years Learning Framework:
4.1 Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflexivity.
4.2 Children develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating.
Links to National Quality Standards:
1.1.2 - Each child’s current knowledge, strengths, ideas, culture, abilities and interests are the foundation of the program.
3.1.1 - Outdoor and indoor spaces, buildings, fixtures and fittings are suitable for their purpose, including supporting the access of every child.
3.2.2 - Resources, materials and equipment allow for multiple uses, are sufficient in number, and enable every child to engage in play-based learning.
